Research and Planning - (Beyonce - Who Run The World)

This is a very high budget video by Beyonce which fits in the amplification/ disjuncture genre. It uses the conventions of a band and solo artist performance. Beyonce could also be included of the idea of the 'star image'. She makes the record company a substantial profit through her songs and music videos as she is so popular worldwide. The conventions that are used demonstrate the effective use of camera movement and angles, editing, post production digital effects, lighting and mise en scene. Her look and style is very attractive which makes the viewers hooked. The choreography is also a huge part of the video and makes it successful as a whole. The close ups identify different features and show her facial expressions and emotions. The song is very catchy and the visuals have a strong link with the music. The theme of 'girl power' is expressed by the display of many women joining together to create a force. This is very clear throughout the video and works well with the song.

Research and Planning - (Avril Lavigne - When your gone)

This video fits into the illustration music video genre. The story is quite emotional and down beat and this is shown as the lyrics match the visuals. It is quite different to Avril Lavigne's other music videos as they are usually quite upbeat and positive which expresses her 'care-free' attitude. The same common conventions are used in a band and solo artist performance in this video. These are significant as they highlight the complex use of camera shots, camera movement, editing, lighting and mise en scene.

Research and Planning - (Jessie J - Nobody's Perfect)

This video by Jessie J fits in the amplification/ disjuncture genre category. It is quite unusual but the visuals are still relevent to the lyrics at some parts. She also lip syncs and has eye contact with the camera which keeps the viewer interested. The complex mise en scene is the key feature in this video and her fans would know that that is her style and matches her personality. Common pop conventions are used such as bright colours, unusual costumes, artificial lighting, good quality editing and complex camera shots and angles. Her body language and close up shots show her humour as well as other emotions she experiences throughout the video as the mood changes along with the lyrics of the song.

Research and Planning - (Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You)

This video by Kelly Clarkson is an illustration piece. It is quite a stereotypical pop music video as the story is easy to follow and is very upbeat and makes the viewers feel good. A variety of conventions are used which makes the video so successful as a whole. They help express her personality which makes the breakup so comical as you can see her emotions and feelings. Her style is very trendy which attracts the viewer's eye. Fast and complex editing is used as well as a variety of camera shots and angles which works well with the temp and genre of the song.

Research and Planning - (Lenka - The Show)

This video by Lenka is an illustration/ amplification text. It is quite simple but uses complex editing to add a different effect. The story is quite easy to follow and fits well into it's genre type. It uses all of the common conventions of a solo artist performance such as gestures, eye contact, expressions, close up lip syncs and unusual camera shots and angles. The variety of mise en scene is very effective as it makes the story more interesting and keeps the viewers hooked. The bright and vibrant colours also work well with the upbeat and positive song. Her costume is quite girls and fashionable and the complex editing adds humour as it makes the video more unique. The lyrics and beats of the music have a strong connection to the actions of the artists which shows it is also in the amplification category.

Research and Planning - (Dev - Bass Down Low)

This is an example of an illustration music video. The female electropop artist suits this music video as the music relates well to the visuals and lyrics. It looks like a normal pop video due to the use of conventions such as mise en scene, artificial lighting, effective editing and trendy outfits. There is no story to the video although there is a party atmosphere which is consistent in Dev's videos so this will appeal to her fans. Her look fits into the type of genre and her gestures and body language highlights her iconic attitude and personality. The camera movements and shots are also very effective and make the video more successful as a whole. the video looks at a higher standard and quality which is normal for a pop video as it is the most common genre.

Research and Planning - (Vato Gonzalez - Badman Riddim)

This music video is an example of an amplification/ disjuncture text. It is very unusual but the artists still lip sync and the lyrics have a link with the visuals. The outfits that the artists wear are quite fashionable which shows their own style which fits into their own music genre but the costumes they dress up in adds humour and shows their personality. The music also has a strong links with the visuals as the artist's actions and gestures are always in time. Their facial expressions also links well to the music genre of the group. The quick editing and change in camera shots and movements makes the video more interesting and captivating. The mise en scene also works well as it separates the lip syncing of the artists to the more fun side of it when they are messing around with the props outside on the set. The animations also work well with the theme of the video as they act like villains. The bright colours create a positive and upbeat atmosphere and the post production digital effects add to the comical theme.

Research and Planning - (Birdy - Skinny Love)

This music video by Birdy is an example of an illustration text. Birdy is a young female solo artist who does a lot of cover songs. This video highlights her young age and feelings and emotions. The lighting is very dark and no artificial lighting is used. Her costume is quite basic but still trendy and shows she has her own style. The video has no clear story behind it but the change in set and location demonstrates that it is relevant to the lyrics and music. The run down house is quite iconic as it stands out to the viewers and the change in camera movements and shots is also effective. Close ups are used on the piano to show her passion for music. Editing is also used to slow some shots down which could also have a meaning to the song. She has eye contact with the camera and uses gestures and emotion to tell the story which is a common convention of a solo artist performance. The mise en scene works well with the genre of the song as it shows her vulnerability and connection to the song itself. The lyrics are very meaningful and work well with the conventions that are used.

Research and Planning - (OK GO - Here it goes again)

This music video by 'OK GO' fits into the amplification/ disjuncture genre category. It was very basic and simple but the routine that the band do keeps the viewer intrigued which makes the video so unique. It is very unusual as it is so different to other music videos with the same music genre but the lack of conventions used make it stand out more. The costumes that they wear make them look quite trendy and fashionable so the viewers and fans would think that they fit into the current music industry. The colours that they wear break up the lack of set and lighting. There is no mise en scene as it is just a plain room with a silver background, this makes you concentrate more on the band and their routine on the running machines. There is no story to the video and the lyrics have no meaning to the actions and movements of the band themselves. The routine is in time with the music so this is the key feature that is noticed. The song is very repetitive and the lip syncing is very accurate which makes you focus more on the song. There is no camera movement or challenged camera shots that are used which is also very unusual for a band performance. The routine on the treadmills is quite complex and the lip syncing adds humour so it keeps the viewers hooked.

Busted Video - Steph's evaluation of skills learnt.

From storyboarding the 'What I Go To School For' video and creating the shot lists, I have learnt that there is a lot to consider when planning a music video. Watching the video repeatedly helped me identify key things in the video that you can't find from just watching it once. I learnt that storyboarding is essential when planning a video as it breaks up the structure and different shots so that they will be easier during the filming process. The types of shots must also be considered so that you know what angles, speed and types of shots to use later on. The shot lists were helpful as you can plan the locations, actors and props in advance and also when filming will specifically take place. Experimenting with the video camera helped me as I wasn't very confident before so this practice should help me with future work. Practicing lip syncing was also important to make the video look more realistic. The key thing that I learnt was not to take too many shots with different people as editing can be difficult which makes the process more time consuming. We filmed numerous times to make the video as good as possible. I will use these key skills in the next film that I produce.

Busted Video - Steph's Risk Assessment.

The key risks that could occur during the filming of the video are:

people tripping over tables or chairs
falling off steps if steps are used in the exterior shots
accidents with technical equipment
accidents with props

Busted Video - Steph's evaluation questions.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our music video used conventions of the real media product as we remade it so that it was exactly the same as the original video. We used similar filming techniques and planned each film shot so that it was as precise as possible. We also planned the timing of each shot, the costumes, location and props needed. This was important as this is what made the original video so successful. By remaking the music video, we gained more knowledge and understanding about important things to consider during the filming process and also what research must be done before filming. For example planning out a storyboard. We used iMovie on the Macs to edit the clips. This was similar to the conventions of other music videos as it made our video look more realistic. We used other conventions to ensure that our video was as successful as it could have been. Risk assessments, shot lists and planning were also used to create a good quality music video. Key conventions that we used were close up shots, mid shots, long shots and quick paced editing.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Our media product was quite successful as we planned out each shot and location of the shots in advance. This made the filming process a lot less time consuming as we knew exactly what to do. Editing the clips was the hardest thing to do as we had to make sure that they met the same standard as the original video. Timing, lip syncing and putting the clips in the correct order was the main thing to consider. To improve our video we would delete the clips that we didn't need as soon as they were uploaded to save time trying to find the correct clip to insert. Another way to improve our video would be to shoot more of each scene in case some were not appropriate. We nearly had to use the same clip twice until we found another clip to use which would work the same. Lip syncing was not as effective in this clip so another clip may have worked better.

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea4fapn-lns After making our video, we gained opinions from other class members and overall the feedback was very positive. They thought the editing of the clips was very successful and that the video was appealing as a whole. The only thing that was mentioned that could be improved was the quality of the final video. To change this we could save the video as a different file format so that it doesn't affect the good quality editing.

4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

We used many different media technologies throughout the making if our video. The video camera was used for the filming and the tripod was used when angles were needed. After filming we used a firewire to upload the clips onto the Macs. This way we could then edit the clips and change this into an actual music video. We used iMovie for the editing. We then used a memory stick to transfer the saved, final video onto the PC computer. After this we used the computer to upload the video onto Youtube. The storyboard, risk assessment, shot lists and planning notes also came in useful during filming.
