Animatic.

Here we have put together an animatic of our music video using Windows Movie Maker. We have simply scanned in the images from our storyboard and transferred them into the software and put the images in the correct time and place in the video against the song. They are not 100% accurate at this point but at least now we can plan whether we need to make any changes to the storyboard and add any extra shots that we need. During shooting we will shoot ectra shots for any remaining time we have to fill but our storyboard and animatic will be refered back to to identify where the shotscome and how long they are.

Risk Assessment.

For this section I have identified the risks that may occur whilst producing our music video. This will help us plan more in advance and help us recognise any obstacles that get in the way of filming. We must also ensure that our actors are safe at all times whilst being filmed. Below is the risk assessment I have constructed:
Hazard: Fall of actors/equipment
Answer: Yes
Severity: Medium
Likelihood: Low
Persons at risk: All 5 actors and crew (1) - all equipment
Precautions: Minimise the chance of somebody falling by planning exactly what they have to do in advance. Also make sure all equipment is stable and secure (mainly band equipment and cameras/lighting devices)

Hazard: Temporary structures
Answer: Yes
Severity: Medium
Likelihood: Low
Persons at risk: 3 actors - band equipment
Precautions: ensure band PA equipment is safe and secure - mainly speakers

Hazard: Tripping hazards
Answer: Yes
Severity: Medium

Precautions: Ensure all lighting fixtures and artificial lighting is supervised by crew members at all times to prevent overheating or the band equipment lighting from falling.

The Band.

For the band to appeal to an audience we need to create a star image. This is a crucial element as making the band easy to identify with to the audience helps them to connect. The image of the band can intensify what a music video already represents, particularly if the song is not aimed at something specific.
Richard Dyer speaks of 'stars' as a 'phenomenon of consumption' and splits star image into four categories. The first is emotional affinity. For a band to gain fans they have to create a bond or connection, primarily it could be assumed that the song itself, and lyrics, would help to create this. A recognisable style or a certain rhythm could contribute or lyrics that can be related to the audience. This connection could also be formed due to the age of band. The majority of successful bands today create music that is aimed at the age group they are currently in; therefore having band members of a similar age makes them more accessible to audiences. For our band I think this is something we have achieved. The song and actual artist of the band are of similar age to the band members we have decided on. The simple story in the video would also be relatable to the audience as relationships could be classed as a relevant part of life. As we see in many television programmes, videos and songs 'love' is often a topic, this is clearly something that is successful with most audiences and will connect and create an emotional connection between the band and audience.
This idea of connection links into Dyer's second point of self identification. The band is recognisable as people and the audience can see themselves in the same situation. The genre we have chosen allows us to gain this more than most as although the indie genre looks for the 'unique' aspect of bands, the popular style for genre currently revolves around simpler ideas. Clothes are styled but not over the top costumes and there is a basic feel to most videos. If we were to create a rock band and video for example we would be looking more to create a rebellious image for the band as this is what identifies with that audience. Or a pop video would involve creating a more expensive high fashion look.
Imitation is the third point and probably focuses most on why these elements create a star. Although the image needs to be relatable to the audience and create a bond the stars need to be idolised; someone we aspire to be like. A lot of this would come from the bands style and attitude. The style of clothes has to be the right balance between achievable and desirable. We want the audience to relate to clothes as they would wear them themselves, yet the 'cool' style of how the clothes are worn or put together would be the desirable element. An attitude is also something we should consider giving the band, although the genre consists of both rebellious and good images we wanted to create a band that are pretty relaxed, and with the mix of girls and boys I think the right balance would be a band with a good reputation who have a tendency to break the rules occasionally. This makes them likable yet interesting as a band. If we had gone for a more controversial artist there is the risk of cutting out a part of the audience we are targeting.
The fourth point made refers to projection. This furthers the imitation and takes it to the next level. As this is quite an extreme part of the theory it is something I would say doesn't apply to our genre. There is a strong sense in the indie genre of being quite relaxed, so projection is not something we would expect to occur.
Richard Griffith’s theories on star image are similar to that of Dyer. He speaks of stars being ambiguous, 'both ordinary and special' this is what we will be aiming to achieve with our band, a sense of normality of them coming from there background and the personalities, however there music and style is something we desire to copy. The lead singer is key to this as he is the main representative for the band so his styling and attitude will be key to creating the image, with the girls just replicating it.

Representations in our music video.

For this section we are identifying the main features of our music video. This will refine the idea as a whole. It will also break it down so the video is easier to explain.
Who?
In our music video we are having two characters for the story aspect and three band members for the band performances. One of the characters is the lead singer in the band. His name is James Press. Sara Zanjani will be the girl in the story who plays the lead singer's love interest. These two people are a couple in the video and it is clear that they are going through a rough patch in the relationship. This is significant to the song as it relates to the lyrics. The three band members are Steph Jarram on drums, Grace Wedgbury on guitar and James Press being another guitarist and the lead singer.
What?
Our music video will involve both a story and band performance. The band performance will be used to break up the story and will be used mostly at the chorus and when there are no lyrics. The story involves a struggling couple that then go on to make up nearer the end of the video. Their actions will reflect what the lyrics say so that the story is consistent. Refer to the storyboard to see the full story.
Where?
We have chosen a variety of simple locations for our video. This is typical of the indie genre and relates to the conventions that we researched previously. We want to keep our video as simple as possible so that the location, props or other features do not distract the audience from the story or band themselves. We are having numerous close up shots of certain objects such as a clock as this relates to the story and we are having interior and exterior shots. The band performances will be shot in my back garden as this is quite different and makes you focus more on the band performing because of the simple set. This will also be shot in the day so it will be daylight. The front of my house will also be used as this is part of the story when James knocks on the door. The interior shots will be shot at Becca's as we just need to use the kitchen for when the couple are arguing. Jame's car will also be used for when he is driving to see Sara and he also sleeps in his car.
Why?
We have chosen these locations and a simple story so that the video looks realistic but not too complex for the audience to follow the story. We chose the listed band members as they looked well together as a group as they each have their own unique image. The story was constructed around the lyrics so we feel that the story is suitable and appropriate for the genre of the song. The characters will work together and act so that the story is easier to follow. By limiting the amount of locations we use will make it easier as we can then focus on other more important conventions such as lighting, using a variety of camera techniques and also styling.
How?
We will create the video by experimenting and mind mapping a few more ideas on camera shots and other indie music video conventions. We will plan how we are going to shoot and what bits we are going to shoot so that the shots look effective. By producing a schedule list, storyboard and risk assessment, this will allow us to identify any obstacles that we may have to overcome and how we are going to do this. We will conduct a few practice shots and categorise each shot for each scene so that we can shoot all of these in one day. This will save us a lot of time instead of working through each shot in order. We will also do a photo shoot of the band in advance so that we can experiment with styling and costumes. We will also need to sort out what equipment we will need for the camera techniques that we are using.

Locations/Objects in our video.

For this section I have taken a few photographs of the locations that will be in the video. They are very basic and simple although this is our aim as it meets the conventions of a typical indie video. This way the audience will not be distracted from the story or the band.
The clock
For our video we have decided to include a few close ups on this clock as it demonstrates time going forward and backwards and is relevant to the song title 'One Night In October'. We will film the clock speeding up going clockwise and anti-clockwise by using the dial at the back. We will also edit this shot in post-production editing.
The garden
This garden will be where the band performances are shot. This is quite an unusual setting for a band performance but it is still very simplistic and eyecatching so we thought it may look quite effective. The drum kit will be located on the patio in the top left hand corner of the image and a sheet will be hung from the shed so that this is not visible. The lead singer will be in the centre of the garden equipped with a microphone and a guitar and the other guitarist will be on the right hand side of him.
Front of house/Driveway
These photographs demonstrate the location that will be used for the story aspect of the video. The front is used nearer the end of the video showing James knocking on the door and returning back to see Sara. It will also be used to show the two characters going their separate ways when they have fallen out as they will walk in opposite directions when they have reached the top of the driveway. Jame's car will also pull into the drive to show his return.
Kitchen
This is the location we will be using for our interior shots for the story aspect. We will show the couple arguing at the table where the phone and clock will also be. This is also where Sara storms out and in this location we are also using a variety of different camera techniques such as a whip pan that goes around the table.

Researching Camera Angles/Shots - The Zutons 'Always Right Behind You'

Looking at these shots is of band performance is essential research for our music video as a large section involves band performance. It is important that the performance sequences feature shots conventionally used in professional videos to get the right feel. It is also important we use shots from our genre as we have found different genres use different types of camera angles and positioning.
A close up of the instruments played with the focus not on the band member is definitely something we will be including throughout the performance sections of video. We found a lot of videos featured this and cut between wider band performance shots. Of course it will be essential to time the music right to the instrument being played, but this seems conventional of our genre and is something we will look to include. The angle is definitely something we should consider using as it captures the right amount in the shout and is definitely achievable.

This is definitely also a shot we will be using, it focuses on the lead singer and is personal enough to connect to the audience. We will probably use this when particularly relevant lyrics are sung, to add more character. This represents the band as a whole, with the main singer in clear focus and other band members vaguely in the background. It is typical of a band similar to the one we plan to use and reflects the dynamic of the band. Whilst researching videos we also found close ups of the lead singer were often required by the producers in order to use star image as an appeal. Although this won't affect us it is something to consider if we want our video to be as realistically professional as possible.

This is a particular shot of interest as it includes focus on two band members. It is slightly different to normal shots as there is not just one focus, hence making the frame more interesting. looking at this we can take ideas of varying shots from typical close ups and wide shots as we do not want the band performance to be repetitive, however we do want it to flow seamlessly and a shot such as this is something we could achieve to create what we want.

Having a new angle makes the shot more interesting, little features to look at makes the shot seem new and interesting while still flowing in with the rest of the sequence. I like this shot particularly because of how it is framed. The drummer is slightly off central and slightly cut off at the bottom; it focuses on the most interesting part of the shot and although is not a close up, the drummer still appears clearly in focus.

This is a shot we have discussed using in our video as we thought it was something reasonably different that was achievable. The shot is hugely energetic and the angle reflects this. The focus here is on the drummer not the instrument which makes it more personal, and would therefore possibly be used during a shot where there is lyrics or a particularly stand out drum rhythm.

Again this is shot we will be replicating, it features in many videos and if timed correctly something that could look very effective. It draws focus to the rhythm of the song and helps give a feel for the music. It is something that has proved successful in many videos before and hopefully will contribute a conventional touch to our video.

This shot is fairly similar to one previous however is slightly more of a close up. The focus on the drums would suggest this is a particularly up beat, dramatic part of the song. For similar points during our song this is a shot we could consider as it would represent the effect of the music we are trying to create.

Again this focuses on two band members and feels effective. It makes a change from the straight close ups often used and makes the shot more interesting to look at. The fact it is a mid shot is interesting, it focuses on the top third of the bodies as oppose to making sure everything is captured in the shot. This is something to take forward into our filming.

I think the distance of the band members from the camera is something of importance in the shot. They're whole bodies are not featured, only enough is fitted in so that each person can be seen in the shot. There is very little excess blank space in the shot, only the bare minimum needed. This is certainly something to be aware of and to make sure we include in our video. If the shot is too far away it won't look like a conventional band performance,

This is a shot to consider when backing vocals are obvious in the song. It brings the backing singers in the band into focus and the angle adds a new perspective of the band. Again the shot feature the bare minimum of blank space and carefully fits the drummer into shot without been covered by the guitarist. Getting little details such as this right is what will make our video look realistic and professional.

Shots such as this stand out on the right part of the song. It represents the bands music and is representative of the indie genre, showing the idea that the band produces its own music and is personal to them, hence the lead singer playing key guitar solos.

Ideas for the story aspect of our video.

Here I have researched some more into illustrative music videos. Just like with the band performance research I looked into how the same genre of music videos represented their stories. As we are having a combination of both in our video I thought it would be a good idea to research both aspects before finalising our story. The stories in the videos below may not be clear but it is clear that there is a story to follow because of what the band members or actors are doing. Our story will be quite simple and will be structured around the lyrics of our song. We have a rough idea of what will happen in our story and this will be shown shortly in the storyboard. For the time being we will still be looking at previous or current videos for inspiration and ideas for the band performance and story parts of our video.

The story in this video is very simple and easy to follow. It mainly focuses on the lead singer which leaves the audience intrigued. The relationship between the music and lyrics is very clear as he is at a gig in search for his girlfriend and this is what the story is based on as we can see what their relationship is like from the very beginning. The story is quite repetitive as the mise en scene, styling and location is the same throughout but this is effective as it makes you focus more on the story and the singer himself.

The story in this video is also very simple and the black and white effect blends well with the tone of the song as it adds emotion. The acting expresses the lyrics clearly which also helps tell the story. It is also clear that the story is based around the girl due to the close ups and variety of camera shots used to capture her feelings and emotions.

This video also has a story based on a relationship. This is relevant to our video as our story will be about a couple struggling to keep their relationship going due to arguing. The body language has a string link to the lyrics in this video which helps express the emotion. Once again I like the simplicity of the story and how the camera angles and basic mise en scene emphasise the emotion of the actors/singer. The close up of the couple intensifies the feelings that they have towards one another which makes the story more believable.

The story in this video is also about a couple clearly arguing. I like how the acting emphasises the lyrics as it shows the situation that they are in. The mise en scene is very realistic which makes the story more believable and the continuity is also spot on so the story is easy to follow.

The range of camera techniques used in the video keeps the audience intrigued and the story is also quite random as there is not always relevance to the visuals and lyrics. The editing is very effective and I like how the reverse effect emphasises the emotion of the singer as he has eye contact with the camera regularly. The story also fits with the tempo of the song and the mise en scene is once again very realistic so the story is easy to follow. By the end of the song it is clear that the story is once again based on a relationship which is relevant to our video.

The story in the video is very simple and is not necessarily linked to the lyrics although the story is easy to follow. There is a lot of band performance in this video but I like how it refers back to the story to break the performance up. The story is very basic and not a lot happens but it is still realistic and easy to follow. It works well with the tone of the song and the visuals do not distract the audience from focusing on the band.

Ideas for the band performance aspect of our video.

For this section I have researched further into the band performance aspect that will in our music video. Our ideas at this stage for the band performance is that the band will all be set up in my back garden and will be filmed in the daytime. The camera angles and shots will vary to make the performance more interesting but the set could be quite interesting as it is quite unusual and different to other videos we have researched. The videos below are ones that I have looked at mainly focusing on how the bands are presented and how they react to the camera. These characteristics will be taken into consideration so that we can take some ideas and turn them into our own. Our band performance will be quite simple as the set is quite simple but this will encourage the target audience to focus more on the band themselves. This is where costume and the style of the band is also essential to consider. The videos below all fit into our indie genre and the performances are also quite simple. I like the simplicity of the set and how the band members have regular eye contact with the camera to capture the audience's attention. Some videos are more complex than others but the range of camera angles and shots are what we are looking for for inspiration at this point.

Our progress to date.

So far we have researched a variety of music videos, CD covers and magazine adverts that inspire us and that will help us gain our own ideas for our coursework. These all fit into our genre that we have focused on and we will take certain characteristics of them and adapt them to create our own ideas. We have analysed these contexts to help us understand how they are made, how they fit into the current industry and appeal to their target audiences. Now we have done this research, we have selected our song, band name, band genre and band members. Our band is called PABLO AND THE PEOPLE and it includes 3 band members. We have chosen the song 'One night in October' by Little Comets as they fit perfectly into our indie genre. We like how simple the band's style and performances are in their low budget videos so this will help us be more creative and imaginative for our own video. We have mind mapped a range of ideas as to what our video will include. We did this by analysing the lyrics carefully and adapting these into a story of our own as our video will be illustrative. We are also including band performances in the video to appeal to our target audience and highlight the band's personality and talent. Now we have created a story alongside our lyrics which has acted as a mini storyboard, we are now at the stage at storyboarding each specific shot. We will also soon be doing a photo shoot with our band members to express their style. For additional ideas whilst storyboarding our video, we will still be posting other examples of videos, CD covers and magazine adverts which inspire us and that we can develop more ideas from.

Refining Ideas

For this we went through the lyrics of the song and planned the story/performance elements in to fit around the lyrics to help the video with the storyboard process we will be doing shortly.

Identifying visual objects from the lyrics of 'One Night In October' for ideas.

Here I have identified just a few objects that are mentioned in the song. I think that by having quick shots of these objects in our video will look very effective as it will fit the illustrative category. As we are having a band performance as well as story in our video, I think these shots would help break up the transition between the two themes. Because the song is quite upbeat, the display of these objects would express the lyrics clearly as they are quite random but still quirky. They are significant to the song as it is telling a story. Our video will be more visual because it is illustrative and there will be more going on. By showing this link between the lyrics and visuals will keep the audience interested in wanting to watch the video. I also think that stop motion and animation will work well with our song as the lyrics are very catchy and stand out to the audience. By repeating what they are singing in text form will emphasise this and it will work well with the indie theme because of the bright colours. By letting the audience glimpsing at these objects in a quick shot,  they will understand the lyrics easier but not get bored of seeing the object for too long. The whole video will not show visual objects throughout because the band performance also needs to be shown but these visual shots that relate to the lyrics will work well to show the band's humour and personality.

Pitch Feedback

The overall result of our pitch seemed to be that we had covered the details of what we are planning to produce. We received what seemed to be positive feedback on the ideas we have produced so far. The only thing we failed to mention in the pitch was the details of those in the band. Although we know we want one male lead singer and two girls in the band, along with a girl to focus the 'story on', we have yet to finalise who we will be using for definite, this is something we will be doing in the next week.

Styling Ideas - Boys (Lead Singer)

We have decided that our lead singer will be dressed as smart/casual. There will also be costume changes during the video so picking outfits needs to be organised carefully to demonstrate his style and genre that he fits into. The above photo is a picture of The Drums. Their style is quite indie as it is very simple but they each are unique. The plain tee could work quite well in the video as it doesn't distract you from anything else happening around him. The hooded jacket also looks quite effective and trendy but Little Comets wear these items quite a lot so we could go for a smarter look. Checked shirts or blazers may be another option as they are not too smart but work well for the indie genre. The tight jeans are very common in these types of bands or even chinos could express this type of genre clearly. Boys that fit into this usually usually care quite a lot about their appearance so we don't want our lead singer to look too scruffy. The smarter look would work better to contrast from what Little Comets wear with their branded hoodies etc.
Here is an example of what Friendly Fires would wear. They are slightly smarter than The Drums and this is the sort of look we are going for. They are not overly smart but they make the trend look more casual by wearing a patterned shirt or contrasting the look with brighter colours. This could work well for the numerous costume changes as it will keep the audience captivated by the artist expressing their style and personality. I like the simplicity of this look and it will work well with the genre of the song.
This is a picture of Rizzle Kicks. Their style is slightly more masculine as they where a lot of hoodies, trackies and caps. This suits their music genre and it stands out to their audience. Their target audience find this style appealing as they look at them for inspiration and copy their trends. The clothes that they wear are quite simple but the way that they wear the items is what makes the look so effective. Branded clothes are very popular in this type of genre so our artist may choose to wear something a bit smarter and doesn't distract the audience from other things happening in the video.
Here is a typical example of what Two Door Cinema Club would wear. They meet the style that we are looking for as they are quite smart but casual at the same time. Blazers, shirts, skinny jeans and cardigans are just a few examples of what you could see this band in. We will be dressing our lead singer in something similar so that he meets the indie genre. I like how they express the look with bright colours so that they work well together with more simple items of clothing. This contrast is very inspiring and encourages their fans to dress in a similar way and follow their style. Checked shirts and cardigans would also be a good look for our band member.

Styling Ideas - Girls (Band Members)

Here I have selected a few images of what our girl band members inspire to look like. These artists are quite indie and stand out by wearing bright colours and trendy iconic items. The above picture is a photo of Eliza Doolittle. She is a very popular indie artist and she is most known for her unique style. She is often seen in high waisted shorts, a tshirt and sneakers. One of our band members will use this look to express the indie genre. This style stands out and works very well with this type of music.

Here is a photo of Marina from Marina and the Diamonds. Her style is much more bright and vibrant which makes her stand out so much. The items do not always go well together but she makes them look trendy. Our band members will be more simple and basic just like Eliza's style but Marina's outfits still fit into the indie genre, they are just too distracting for our song.

Here are two people that fit perfectly into our indie genre. Pixie Lott fits into the genre as her style is quite simple but she accessorizes to express different features of the outfit. I like how she wears flowery headbands and numerous bracelets to finish the perfect look to a nice dress, or even a tshirt and shorts. Alexa Chung is quite similar in style but slightly more smart. Our girl in the story needs to be quite girly so Pixie Lott is a huge inspiration for this look. The other band members could use similar trends to Alexa's as they are less feminine but still fashionable and eye catching.

Note to the examiner.

Just a quick note to inform you that Lucyann will no longer be working with us as she has left for college. Me and Becca will continue the coursework as a two!

Inspiration

Although I have liked the song for a while, I have only recently come across the video for Shuffle. It instantly captured my attention by the simplicity and how entertaining the video was with such a simple concept. I think this is something we could take forward, although it isn't possible for us to create footage of a tour, it is certainly something we can replicate and something we can aspire to. I particularly like how personal the video is and I think this really makes it more enticing to watch; it gives us an insight into the band's real life which fans are interested in.

Pablo And The People: Band Biography

Career:
Pablo and the People are a indie-alternative, mixed gender band from the London borough of Ealing. They formed in late 2008 after life long friends James Press (Lead Vocals and guitar player) and Ryan Harrison(Lead Guitar) decided to leave their previous bands to pursue a project together. In March 2009 Steph Jarram joined the duo and the band began work on a debut album. After performing demos from the unreleased album to record companies, the three 20 year olds were signed to XL Recordings in March 2010 on a one album contract.
In May 2011 they posted on the band website that the album was close to completion and that debut single 'The Library' would be available to stream on the site as of June 5th 2011. The single received positive reviews from Radio 1 DJ's Zane Lowe and Ferne Cotton who subsequently played the track on their respective shows, producing positive feedback from the general public. A week later 'The Library' was available for download on iTunes and peaked at number 17 on the official UK indie chart.
Over the summer months a lot of hype began to surround the band, leading to guest appearances on radio shows, interviews with magazines such as Q and a general buzz surrounding the release of the new album. The previous demos on the bands website reached over 25,000 plays as anticipation from committed fans grew. Although Pablo and the People remain fairly unknown to mainstream market, they have aquired much expectation among the critics of their genre. The second single is due to be released towards the end of October with the self titled album out in November.
Personal:
The band members all still live in London, enjoy spending their time with friends and down the pub. James is the frontman and the primary song writer in the group and spends a lot of time working on material for the band, his cat Pablo is also the inspiration for the bands name. Ryan continues to study at the open university for an honours degree in music whilst balancing band commitments. Although living in London, Steph often commutes to Birmingham where her family now live; she sights the city as inspiration for some of the band's music.

Pitch.

Deciding on a Song.

The song we eventually decided on was 'One Night In October' by The Little Comets. We decided on this song because it fitted into the criteria we were looking for; its a fairly simple song that of course fitted into the genre we had decided on. We also liked the fact the song is not particularly well known so it would not cause audiences to draw comparisons to the original band. Although we didn't really want a song that already had a video, the fact that it isn't very well known meant that we could put this aside, as we liked the song so much. The lyrics were another positive for the song that persuaded us to choose it as they are interesting and gave us some rough ideas towards what we could include in the video as well as the performance element which we knew we wanted to include. This was a song that the three of us agreed would work best and something that we felt we had enough inspiration from to create an interesting and successful music video.

Lyrics:
Oh language is dead, so she believes
I'm looking up, socially bereaved,
Just like Carlisle, she lies on the border
Disorder surrounds, her every noun

One Night In October
The clocks go back
And she attacks me oh
Grabbing my left shoulder
Suspects in texts that leave her wrecked
Oh oh One night in October

I sit her down and say this must stop,
Cause all we do is argue then shop,
She goes to Boots, I go to Argos
Complete with deceit
We stalk each aisle

One night in October,
She throws a towel, the sink, a scowl
Oh oh One night in October,
With more invective than the average detective
Questions me on the lawn

With doors ajar, tonight I will sleep in my car,
One night in October

Oh ooooh oooh

Oh intensive care, intensively she's aware
That I, I miss the heat, solace and sway of the sheets
Oh, this dashboard's so hard
Can't cushion the beats of my heart

One night in October!
Oh oh one night in October
The clocks go back,
And she attacks me oh
Grabbing my left shoulder
With more invective
Than the average detective
Questions me on the lawn

With doors ajar
Tonight I might sleep in the car
One night in October

Heeey heeeey!

Examples of other text - Magazine adverts.

This advert is fairly different from your everyday magazine advert. Firstly the size of the advert is half the 'normal' size as the majority of magazine adverts are at a full page size. This could be for reasons such as a lower budget for distribution or perhaps the advert was more effective and aesthetically pleasing in a smaller size. The advert consists of the bands name which is in the signature font featured on most of their albums, articles displays etc-using the same font throughout creates a familiarity and recognition of the band. Beneath are details of the new single to be released along with further details of where it can be purchased. To the right hand side is an image which appears to have no obvious relevance to the band or album yet makes the advert look more interesting and eye catching.  Overall this would be a fairly easy advert to create and so, could be an effective one to use for our band-PabloAndThePeople.

Again, another basic yet effective advert consisting of just the bands name, the albums release date and the albums cover. I think the choice to feature the bands album cover is an idea we should consider for our band seeing as they are not a well known and recognised band similarly to Mumford and sons (when this album was advertised). Featuring a album cover on an advert has the effect to eventually create a more recognised album. For example if a person was to be browsing online or in a shop for albums and they came across an album they'd already seen they may be more likely to take a second look as they are familiar with it. Further more I think it will allow the album to be easily identified.

This poster is fairly simple yet very eyecatching. The poster is the same as the cover artwork for Athlete's Black swan album. It identifies the artists and the name of the album in a very large font to draw attention to the audience. The band name is probably the largest as it is something the audience is most likely to recognise and thus draw its audeince in. The distincitve artwork gives a feel for the album as well as represents what it is about, for example the black swan.  It clearly highlights the details of the album release at the bottom of the page, I find it interesting that it includes the different ways the music is available to purchase as this would straight away encourage someone to buy it, seeing that there are lots of different ways makes it seem easily accessable.

This advert is a bit more individual but just as eyecatching to the audience. The rebellious feel of the poster reflects the band's attitude and star image. However it follows the conventions of having the bands name the largest and the album title also very recognisable. Again the information is highlighted at the bottom below the main part of the image. The poster also include the bands website, which is something we should consider for when we make our own poster.

This is again very colourful and draws attention to the image. The image is very modern and reflective of the artist. The wirting is also individual and stands out on the page. However with this the title is the main focus with the artwork identifying the artist. Although less recognisably, it is something to consider. The background image is also something wirth looking at. Again the details are clearly presented at the bottom of the page, this is clearly a convention of these posters. The details include a website, a quote about or from the artist and other relevant information such as the release dates and what is included in the product.

Song Choice.

After deciding our band genre and name, we gathered a list of songs that would fit for our band. The songs listed below all fit into the indie/alternative genre and I like how simple the videos are to them. They all have common indie conventions which make them so unique compared to other genres. We researched a number of the band's songs to identify which ones would work better than others. As a group we decided to pick Little Comet's 'One Night In October' because the videos are very basic and the lyrics are quite quirky. We can identify certain lyrics and film the objects so that the lyrics have a link with the visuals in the video. This is an example of a common indie convention as the objects could be quite random which could make the video very interesting.

Moodboard.

Twitter feed of Pablo And The People.

After deciding the name of the band, we created a twitter feed to spread the word about the new band 'PABLO AND THE PEOPLE'. This way we can advertise events and gain fans direct to our target audience by gaining followers and also following bands and people that inspire the band.

Market Research

The Current Market:
As is typical of music today the indie/alternative genre is very vast and has a wide range of artists that all vary slightly in their music and style. Whilst researching the current 'market' of music videos for this genre there were certain characteristics that many videos had in common. Being completely new the the process of making a music video I think it would be valuable for us to take on board a lot of the conventions used as we know these have proven popular with the audience we are trying to target.
One  aspect of the genre that stands out and is a reason for which we chose this genre is that the videos are often fairly simple. The videos often fit into the illustration category with a large performance element and a simple story line. This is something as a group we could achieve because we are limited with equipment and the skill to achieve an overly complicated video.
Another characteristic often seen is the use of a simple studio with a backdrop. This is used for much of a band's performance and sometimes an entire video. Again this is something that we could achieve as we may not necessarily have the access to other environments, such as a stage or something more elaborate. However, we are not limited to this option and have various other places in which we could film.

The style of the bands is also something to consider. The mood they set in the videos with lighting or editing is often related to the song, however the clothes worn by the artists are often typical of the band itself. The female artists often wear unusual clothing that reflect there style. For example, Florence and the machine wears unusual hippie style clothing and often clothes out of 'floaty' material. These reflect her as an artist and build her star image. Male bands seem to fall into two categories with this genre, however there are some exceptions. The main two categories are smart and more casual. Some males wear suits in most videos, often tight fitting ones that are deemed fashionable and are often quite brightly coloured. Other bands take a more casual approach wearing jeans and a t shirt.
Smart Example:

With this genre there can be some more unusual acts that take a more original approach to music videos. Taking  creative risk can be hugely successful but could also completely miss the target audience. If we were to come up with a more unusual idea that we find appeals to the audience we are targeting and is achievable then it is something we would consider doing as the quirkier videos often stand out more in peoples memory, thus being more successful.
Videos from this genre mainly fit into the illustration category, so this would be the most likely type of video for us to do. However there are videos that represent amplification and disjuncture so if we were to come up with an idea that fitted in to this category then we could take inspiration from them.

As we are creating a video then the artist will need a record label which hypothetically would fund the video. As our budget is minimal for the actual production then it would make sense for us to use an independent record label as this would be the most realistic. After researching independent record labels from the UK, two particular companies seemed to have signed similar to acts to our artists style, these were XL Recordings and Domino Records. XL has signed artists such as The XX and Friendly Fires. Domino's launched the Arctic Monkeys and The Kills. Looking at the websites it seems clear that each video is directed by an individual that the company or artist them self has chosen, rather than a selected team from the company. This has been successful for these artists. Of course as a group we will be producing every part of our music videos ourselves so we know this is not completely unconventional of the real industry.

Examples of Other Texts

CD Covers:

Looking at these covers it is clear the genre we have picked uses various different styles. A typical convention of any album cover is to have the artist's name and a photo of the artist(s) on the cover, as well as the name of the album. Looking at these covers it seems that the album and artist name nearly always feature, possibly more for practical reasons than anything else as it allows the audience to know what they're buying. However, it is not as typical to have the artist on the cover, particularly it seems with bands made up of men. Instead their covers often feature women or a piece of artwork accompanied by the artist and album name. The female artists more typically feature themselves. I think it is interesting that both genders seem to feature females on the cover, this is possibly something to consider for ours as it clearly appeals to the audience. The male artist covers are more simple so are probably aimed slightly more at males, or represent the the fact that the artist is male. The female artwork is more artistic and creative, which could again represent the artist but also be more aimed at females. However, I think all these album covers appeal to both genders overall. The typed words also reflect the band or the album in particular. They're either the bands logo or a very simple stand out font, which could represent the music itself.

Examples of other texts that fit into our alternative/indie genre.

This video 'Skinny Genes' by British recording artist Eliza Doolittle fits in well with our genre. The song was released on April 11 2010 and it came from her own album called 'Eliza Doolittle' which is very catchy and the indie-pop genre is very clear throughout the lyrics and visuals of the video. Her style is also very indie and eye-catching and the bright colours create a very vibrant theme. These characteristics will be taken into consideration in our music video to keep the genre consistent and clear.

'Norgaard' by The Vaccines is quite a short song but is a good example of the genre we are aiming to use. The lyrics relate to their target audience which makes the visuals so appealing. The song is from their debut album 'What did you expect from The Vaccines?' which was released on 14 March 2011 and the indie genre is consistent throughout the whole album. I like the simplistic setting of this video and also the performance and story aspect of the video. This way the lyrics has a relationship with the visuals. The band is becoming more and more popular and their style is very trendy so is appealing to their target audience.

This video by Vampire Weekend is what we aim for our video to look like. I like the performance aspect of the video as the set is very basic but makes you focus more on the band as a whole. The editing is used very effectively to make the movements and visuals more static. The bright outfits of the band members also break up the plain background and helps express the indie style.

Little Comets are very popular in the indie/ alternative industry. I like the features of this video as they express this genre very clearly. Some examples include regular costume changes, high quality editing, simple sets, performance from the band and the lyrics relating to the visuals. We may choose to use these common indie conventions in our music video.

This video by Two Door Cinema Club is another good example of our genre of our band. They have regular eye contact with the camera and I like the variety of camera angles and shots that are used. The mise en scene is quite complex as there are many locations but once again I like the performance aspect as well as the story so that it expresses the genre clearly. Their style is once again very fashionable which appeals to fans of the indie genre and the bright colours stand out even more.

This video by The Ting Tings focuses more on the performance of the band more than the illustrative aspect. I like the plain, simple set and it makes you focus more on the band and it doesn't make the video hard to follow. I like the characteristics of the camera angles and shots as they work well with the artificial lighting. They make the video more interesting as the contrast to the simple idea of the video.

This video is in more of a realistic setting but it helps tell the story and captivates the audiences attention throughout. The indie genre of the song is quite catchy and their unusual style also stands out which appeals to the audience as it makes it more interesting to watch.

As a group we will take specific features from each of these videos for inspiration for our own music video. We will adapt and challenge these characteristics so we can make sure our band fits into the indie genre just like the other artists do.

______________________________________________________________________

After producing this audience profile we have identified what our target audience are looking for. This is just one example of a person that fits into our target audience but as a whole our band will appeal to both male and females aged between 16 and 30 who enjoy indie and alternative music.

Ideas on artists.

For this section we discussed what artists and band's songs and styles we may use for our own music video. Before this we decided on our genre so that it narrowed down what we were looking for. We researched both male and female artists to help us decide exactly what we wanted. We found that all artists are very unique and individual in their own way so we must consider this as the videos will be harder to make. Some are also bigger than others, for example Jessie J compared to Christina Perri. Christina Perri is very new to the industry so has a lot of competition with someone like Jessie J as she has done so well. Her videos are also at a higher standard as she has a bigger budget due to her popularity and the amount of albums and singles she has sold. Our decision was that it would be too difficult to use somebody like Jessie J because her genre does not fit into our alternative/ indie genre and her videos are far too complex. We may choose to use a band such as Two Door Cinema Club and follow the structure of their videos as they are much more simplistic but still intriguing to their target audience. By researching these artists it will help us decide on a band name and a song which we can then put into a mood board to develop further ideas.
