Research and Planning - (Birdy - Skinny Love)

This music video by Birdy is an example of an illustration text. Birdy is a young female solo artist who does a lot of cover songs. This video highlights her young age and feelings and emotions. The lighting is very dark and no artificial lighting is used. Her costume is quite basic but still trendy and shows she has her own style. The video has no clear story behind it but the change in set and location demonstrates that it is relevant to the lyrics and music. The run down house is quite iconic as it stands out to the viewers and the change in camera movements and shots is also effective. Close ups are used on the piano to show her passion for music. Editing is also used to slow some shots down which could also have a meaning to the song. She has eye contact with the camera and uses gestures and emotion to tell the story which is a common convention of a solo artist performance. The mise en scene works well with the genre of the song as it shows her vulnerability and connection to the song itself. The lyrics are very meaningful and work well with the conventions that are used.
